Make a recipe your own, with a few tricks

If you are not creative, but have a passion for cooking there are many ways to turn an existing recipe into your own.  Here are a couple ways I make recipes my own.
1.
Add Your Favorite Spice
I like to add my favorite seasoning to meats and potatoes.  I love Tastefully Simple Seasoned Salt, so I add it to a lot of recipes.  If the recipe calls for salt, I add this spice to give it a little something special.  I also, do this with baking.  For example, I found a yummy no-bake cookie recipe that calls for milk, but I use half white mile and half chocolate milk.  It gave the cookies a little something extra.

2.       Substitution is Ok Too
Also, I try to be healthy so instead of using red meat (like hamburger) I will use ground chicken or ground turkey.  I do this for pastas, casseroles, burgers, tacos, etc.  It tends to have fewer calories and fat.  I have a great recipe for a casserole that calls for red meat, but I use ground turkey and nobody can tell the difference.  My mother-in-law says she can’t eat ground turkey, but I have had her over for dinner and she doesn’t even know the difference.  Tricky me !

3.       Desserts, Scrumptious
When it comes to desserts, I love to mix it up.  I am not creative, but I will look at different recipes and pull things from each one to make a great treat.  For example, I found a great mousse recipe, then I found one that called for strawberries, but I didn’t want to use all the ingredients that way, so I made the yummy chocolate mousse and then topped it with a strawberry mixture, which was to die for.  I love chocolate, so whenever I make a dessert I always try to incorporate it, even if it is a drizzle on top.

It is little tricks like this that will make a great recipe taste better to you.  Use ingredients you love and foods you love to take a basic recipe and turn it into a masterpiece of your own.
